Treasures on Tour: John Hardyng’s Map of Scotland

20 February – 3 July 2022

Take a closer look at this beautiful hand-drawn map from the 1400s, on tour from the British Library.

The British Library is loaning this beautiful hand-drawn map of 15th-century Scotland. The colourful map depicts many Scottish cities and towns and was used by John Hardyng to illustrate his historical chronicle. This loan is part of the British Library’s Treasures on Tour programme, generously supported by the Helen Hamlyn Trust. The map will be on display until 3 July 2022.

The Hardyng Map is the first detailed map of Scotland, presented to the English king in 1457 in an unsuccesful attempt to inspire an invasion.

The map will be on display at the Wardlaw Museum in St Andrews, accompanied by a variety of events to explore this fascinating treasure further.
